What to See in Civic Center Park

Opening hours
5:00 a

Civic Center Park sits between Bannock Street and North Broadway, and Colfax Avenue and 14th Street. Its listed features include benches, a fountain, flower beds and public art, as well as landmark civic structures. You can use the park’s central location to link a walk through its grounds with nearby museums and downtown streets.

The park is about a 32-minute walk from Off Broadway B & B. If you’re planning a visit, note the listed daily opening hours: 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Monuments and Civic Buildings

Monuments and Civic Buildings

The Greek Amphitheatre was completed in 1919 after construction began in 1917. Designed by Denver architects Marean & Norton with Chicago architect Edward H. Bennett, it was conceived as an open-air theatre and memorial to the park’s benefactors. Its seating accommodates up to 1,200 spectators.

Beside the theatre, the 210-foot semicircular Colonnade of Civic Benefactors features murals by Allen Tupper True. Voorhies Memorial, also completed in 1919, was designed by Denver architects Fisher & Fisher and includes murals by True.

The park’s design reflects the City Beautiful movement, which Mayor Robert Speer championed in Denver from his election in 1904 until his death in 1918. The Denver Public Library Central Branch, Denver Art Museum and McNichols Civic Center Building are among the park’s neighbors. For more museum planning, see this guide to art museums in Denver.

Festivals and Public Events

Civic Center Park hosts public events, and the Civic Center Conservancy’s calendar includes events beyond those organized by the Conservancy and its partners. For details about a particular event, contact the organizer listed for it.

Civic Center EATS usually runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays from mid-May through mid-October, with a dozen or more food trucks. It takes place on Bannock Street and the Civic Center Park Meadow. Check the event calendar for the current schedule before making plans.

Getting There and Parking

RTD bus routes 0, 15, 15L, 16 and 52 serve stops near the park. The 16th Street FreeRide connects Union Station and Wade Blank Civic Center Station, running seven days a week without a fare.

Service runs from early morning to late night, every 4–12 minutes depending on the time of day. Wade Blank Civic Center Station is at 16th Street and Broadway; its nine bus bays serve 18 routes.

If you’re driving, the Civic Center Conservancy lists the Denver Post Building Garage at 101 West Colfax Ave. and the Cultural Center Complex Garage at 12th Avenue and Broadway as nearby parking options.

Metered parking is also listed on Bannock Street, 14th Avenue and Broadway. Street parking around the park perimeter is limited, and some meters or lots may be closed, especially around large events.

Access, Closures, and Park Rules

Accessible entrances are on the west and east sides. On the west, sidewalks lead in from Bannock Street; on the east, entrances are on Broadway at Colfax or 14th Avenue, with ramps toward the Central Promenade. Event areas have an additional rule: walk bikes and scooters through them.

Denver Parks and Recreation applies public-event rest periods annually from April 1 through October 31. Civic Center Park aims for two rest-period dates per month, with the exact dates set annually by the Parks Permitting Office. For current access, event and parking details, check the official site before you go; the operator is the Civic Center Conservancy.

Pairing the Park with Nearby Sights

The Denver Art Museum and the Denver Public Library Central Branch sit among the park’s neighbors, so you can pair time outdoors with a museum visit or a stop at the library. For a different kind of city-park outing, compare the lawns, lakes and trails in this guide to Washington Park.
